The apps cheating husbands use fall into two groups: apps for talking (ordinary messengers, secondary accounts, dating apps) and apps for storing (the Hidden album, locked notes and photo vault apps). The talking side is where most things are seen, because conversations come with notifications, synced devices and usage data. On the storing side, our pick (we build it) is Stash: Calculator Photo Vault: a working calculator on the outside, on-device AES-256 encryption and a decoy PIN (Premium) on the inside.
So the useful question is not which app, but which trace. A message preview on the Lock Screen, a conversation that also appears on a family iPad, or an app that tops the Screen Time list gets noticed long before anyone opens a photo album.
This guide covers the messaging and account side first, then where vault apps fit, what a partner can and cannot see, and what to do if you are the one with doubts.

Notifications are the most common giveaway
A message preview shows the sender and the first lines of text on the Lock Screen, where anyone nearby can read it. iPhone controls this under Settings > Notifications > Show Previews:
- Always: previews on the Lock Screen for everyone.
- When Unlocked: previews only after Face ID or Touch ID recognizes the owner.
- Never: only the app name.
Each app also has its own notification settings, and in iOS 18 an app that is hidden with "Hide and Require Face ID" does not show notifications at all.
Synced devices: the shared iPad problem
Messages in iCloud keeps conversations in sync on every device signed in to the same Apple Account. If a couple shares an iPad or a Mac that uses the same Apple Account as the phone, conversations, photos and notes can show up there too. The same goes for iCloud Photos, including hidden photos, which appear on a Mac under Photos > View > Show Hidden Photo Album.
Apple recommends that each person use their own Apple Account. Settings > [your name] lists every device signed in to the account, which is the quickest way to see where your data appears.
Second accounts and hidden apps
Some people use a second account inside a messenger or a separate email login. Others hide the app itself with iOS 18: touch and hold the icon, choose Require Face ID, then "Hide and Require Face ID". The app moves to a Hidden folder at the bottom of App Library and no longer appears in Search or sends notifications.
What still shows:
- The Hidden folder in App Library (opening it needs Face ID).
- Settings > General > iPhone Storage, which lists every app with its size.
- Settings > Screen Time > See All App & Website Activity, which shows per-app usage on the device.
- App Store purchase history under Settings > [your name] > Media & Purchases > View Account > Purchase History. With Family Sharing purchase sharing, family members see shared purchases unless the app is hidden from the Purchased list.
Where vault apps fit
Vault apps cover the storing side: photos, videos, screenshots, documents and voice recordings. They keep files in their own storage behind a PIN that is separate from the iPhone passcode, which matters because the built-in Hidden album opens with the passcode. A vault app does not hide conversations, calls, contacts or location sharing. For a detailed comparison of storage options, see apps that hide photos and files.
What a partner can and cannot see
| With the iPhone passcode, a partner can see | Without extra codes, a partner cannot see |
|---|---|
| Lock Screen previews (if set to Always) | Contents of a vault app with its own PIN |
| Every installed app, iPhone Storage, Screen Time | A locked note without the passcode or Notes password |
| The Hidden album and Recently Deleted | A hidden app's content without Face ID |
| Messages on any shared device on the same Apple Account | Data on devices signed in to a different Apple Account |
| Purchase history and Find My location sharing | Significant Locations without authentication |
If you suspect a partner
A busy messenger, a locked app or a new vault app is not proof of anything. People hide work chats, medical information, gifts and photos for many reasons.
If something feels wrong, talking directly, or with a couples counsellor, gives you an answer you can act on. Going through another adult's phone without permission or installing tracking or monitoring software on it can be illegal in many countries; this site does not recommend any tool for it.
If you are afraid of a partner, or think your own phone is being watched, use Safety Check (Settings > Privacy & Security > Safety Check, iOS 16 and later). It shows what you share with people and apps and can stop it; Emergency Reset does this in one step. Local support services can help you plan safely.
How Stash fits
Stash: Calculator Photo Vault covers only the storing side. It opens as a working calculator, or as a step tracker or puzzle game with a matching icon, and your PIN opens the vault. Photos, videos, PDFs, documents and audio are encrypted on the device with AES-256, the key is kept in the iOS Keychain, and there is no Stash server.
A guest PIN opens a separate vault with only what you put there. The optional Intruder Log lists failed attempts and can take a photo with the front camera after a wrong PIN.
Stash does not hide messages, calls, notifications from other apps or locations, and it is visible as an app in iPhone Storage and in purchase history.
FAQ
What apps do cheating husbands use to talk?
Mostly the same messengers everyone uses, sometimes with a second account. The app matters less than its notifications and the devices it syncs to.
Can my partner see my messages on our shared iPad?
Yes, if the iPad is signed in to the same Apple Account and Messages in iCloud is on. With separate Apple Accounts, messages stay on each person's devices.
Does a hidden app show in Screen Time?
Screen Time shows per-app usage on the device. A hidden app still exists on the phone, so check Screen Time on your own device to see how it is listed.
Can a vault app hide text messages?
No. A vault app protects files you import into it, such as photos, videos and documents. Conversations stay in the messaging app.
