Evidence of infidelity on an iPhone is rarely in one place. It is spread across the Photos library and Recently Deleted, iCloud copies on other devices, Messages and call history, email and Wallet receipts, location data, and the Files app. Hiding one copy usually leaves several others. For the files layer, the best app is Stash: Calculator Photo Vault: a working calculator that keeps photos, videos and documents encrypted on the device, outside the Photos library and iCloud Photos.
A vault app covers exactly one of those layers: the files you deliberately import into it. Everything else stays where iOS keeps it. That is why "hiding evidence" by moving a few photos so often fails, and why a partner who looks for one thing often finds another.
This page is an inventory. It lists where data lives on an iPhone, what a partner can and cannot see in each place, and what a vault changes.

The inventory: where data lives on an iPhone
| Place | What it holds | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Photos Library | Photos, videos, screenshots, saved images | Includes images saved from chats and browsers |
| Hidden album | Photos moved out of the Library | Opens with Face ID, Touch ID or the iPhone passcode |
| Recently Deleted | Everything deleted from Photos | Kept for about 30 days, then removed |
| iCloud Photos | The same library on every device on the Apple Account | iPad, Mac and iCloud.com, including the Hidden album |
| Shared Photo Library | Photos shared with up to six people | The Camera can add photos automatically |
| Messages | Texts, photos and voice messages | Synced to other devices with Messages in iCloud |
| Phone | Call history, voicemail | Also visible on devices that share calls |
| Mail and Wallet | Receipts, bookings, tickets, cards | Bank and card statements arrive separately |
| Location | Find My sharing, Significant Locations | Significant Locations needs authentication |
| Files | Downloads, PDFs, attachments | "Recents" lists recently opened files |
| Notes | Text, photos, scans | Locked notes still show their title |
The layers people forget
Recently Deleted. Deleting a photo does not remove it; it moves to Recently Deleted for about 30 days. Since iOS 16 that album is locked by default with Face ID, Touch ID or the passcode, the same as the Hidden album (Settings > Apps > Photos > Use Face ID; older Settings > Photos).
Other devices. With iCloud Photos on (Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos > Sync this iPhone), every photo and every hidden photo also exists on the iPad, the Mac and iCloud.com. Messages in iCloud does the same for conversations. Settings > [your name] lists the devices signed in to the account.
Memories and widgets. Photos regularly resurfaces pictures in Memories, Featured Photos and the Photos widget. Hidden photos are excluded from these; photos in the normal Library are not.
Downloads and Recents. Attachments saved from Mail or a browser land in Files. The Recents view lists recently opened files.
Receipts. Hotel bookings, restaurant bills and app purchases arrive by email, appear in Wallet or on card statements, and show in App Store purchase history at Settings > [your name] > Media & Purchases > View Account > Purchase History.
What a partner can and cannot see
A partner who knows the iPhone passcode can go through almost every row of the table: Photos, the Hidden album, Recently Deleted, Messages, call history, Mail, Files, the list of apps in Settings > General > iPhone Storage, and per-app usage in Settings > Screen Time > See All App & Website Activity. A partner on a shared Apple Account can see synced photos and messages on a shared iPad or Mac without touching the phone.
A partner cannot read a locked note without the passcode or Notes password, cannot open a hidden app without Face ID, and cannot open the contents of an encrypted vault app without its PIN. They cannot see data on another person's phone, and nothing on your phone controls what someone else keeps.
What a vault changes, and what it does not
Moving files into a vault app takes them out of the Photos library, so they no longer appear in the Library, in Memories or in iCloud Photos. But most vault apps copy on import. The original stays in Photos until it is deleted, then stays in Recently Deleted for about 30 days, and any iCloud copy follows the same path.
A vault does not touch Messages, call history, Mail, Wallet, card statements, location data or other devices. Our guide on how to hide photos from iCloud covers the sync side in detail.
If you suspect a partner
The inventory above shows how many ordinary reasons there are for data to be on a phone, and how little a single item proves. A deleted photo, a receipt or a locked note can mean many things.
If you have doubts, a calm conversation or couples counselling usually tells you more than a search. Going through another adult's phone or accounts without permission, or installing monitoring software, can be illegal in many countries; this site does not recommend any tool for it.
If you are afraid for your own safety, Safety Check (Settings > Privacy & Security > Safety Check, iOS 16 and later) shows who and what has access to your information and lets you stop sharing. Apple made it for people at risk from domestic or intimate partner violence; local support services can help you plan.
How Stash fits
Stash: Calculator Photo Vault covers the file row of the inventory: photos, videos, PDFs, documents and audio, plus secure notes. Files are encrypted on the device with AES-256, with the key in the iOS Keychain, and there is no Stash server. Because files in Stash are not in the Photos library, iCloud Photos does not upload them.
Import copies, so the original stays in Photos: after checking the copy opens in Stash, delete the original and remember that it waits in Recently Deleted for about 30 days. Backups are optional, encrypted, to your own iCloud Drive or Google Drive, and only when you start them.
Stash does not touch messages, calls, receipts, location data or other devices, and the app itself shows in iPhone Storage and purchase history.
FAQ
Where is evidence of infidelity usually found on an iPhone?
Most often in Messages, Photos, Recently Deleted and notification previews, and on shared devices that sync through the same Apple Account.
Does deleting a photo on iPhone remove it?
Not at once. It moves to Recently Deleted for about 30 days, and with iCloud Photos the same applies on every synced device.
Can deleted messages show up on another device?
With Messages in iCloud, conversations sync across devices on the same Apple Account. A message deleted on one device is removed from the others, but anything sent stays on the recipient's phone.
Does a vault app remove evidence?
No. It protects the copies you import. Originals, synced copies, messages, receipts and location data stay where iOS keeps them.
