To hide text messages on iPhone, combine three built-in settings: set Settings > Notifications > Show Previews to When Unlocked or Never so message text never appears on the Lock Screen, swipe left on a conversation and tap the bell to Hide Alerts, and in iOS 18 lock the Messages app with Face ID (touch and hold its icon, then Require Face ID). The Messages app has no hidden folder and cannot be hidden itself, so a conversation that must not be read has to be deleted, along with every synced copy.
There is no app that hides iMessages and SMS for you: third-party apps, including vault apps, cannot read or move your conversations. What follows are the seven native methods, what each one really hides, and what to do with screenshots or text you want to keep.

The seven ways, at a glance
| Method | What it hides | What stays visible |
|---|---|---|
| Notification previews off | Message text on the Lock Screen and in banners | That a message arrived, and from whom (unless notifications are off) |
| Hide Alerts | Sounds and banners from one conversation | The conversation in the list, with its unread dot |
| Focus filter for Messages | Conversations from people outside the Focus, while it is on | Everything, once the Focus is off |
| Lock Messages with Face ID (iOS 18) | The app's content until Face ID, Touch ID or the passcode | The Messages icon on the Home Screen |
| Delete a message or conversation | The text from the list | Recently Deleted for about 30 days, synced devices, the other person's phone |
| Messages in iCloud and forwarding | Copies on your other devices, when turned off | Your iPhone's copy |
| Notification settings per contact | Alerts from one person | The conversation itself |
1. Turn off message previews
Previews on the Lock Screen are how messages are most often read by accident.
- Open Settings > Notifications > Show Previews and choose When Unlocked (Face ID shows the text only to you) or Never.
- For Messages only: Settings > Notifications > Messages > Show Previews.
- To keep Messages off the Lock Screen entirely, turn off Lock Screen under Settings > Notifications > Messages.
2. Hide Alerts for one conversation
In Messages, swipe left on a conversation and tap the bell icon. New messages from that conversation no longer make a sound or show a banner. The conversation still sits in the list and shows an unread dot. Swipe again to turn alerts back on.
3. Use a Focus filter
A Focus can limit which conversations Messages shows.
- Open Settings > Focus and pick or create a Focus (Work, for example).
- Under Focus Filters, tap Add Filter > Messages.
- Turn on Filter by People List. While that Focus is on, Messages shows only conversations with the people allowed in it.
Good for keeping private chats out of view while the phone is on a desk or a shared screen. The filter ends when the Focus ends.
4. Lock the Messages app with Face ID (iOS 18 and later)
- Touch and hold the Messages icon.
- Tap Require Face ID (or Touch ID, or Passcode), then confirm.
Now the app opens only after authentication, even when the phone is already unlocked and in someone else's hands. Apple's own apps, Messages included, can be locked but not hidden: the "Hide and Require Face ID" option is only for apps from the App Store. Anyone who knows your iPhone passcode can still open it. 5. Delete the message, and its copies
To delete one message, touch and hold it, tap More, select it and tap the trash icon. To delete a whole conversation, swipe left on it and tap the trash icon.
Deleted messages go to Recently Deleted in Messages (tap Edit or Filters at the top of the list, then Show Recently Deleted), where they stay for about 30 days. Delete them there too if you want them gone now. Deleting never affects the other person's phone.
6. Check Messages in iCloud and forwarding
With Messages in iCloud on (under Settings > [your name] > iCloud), every conversation syncs to every device signed in to the same Apple Account, including an iPad or Mac that others use. Deleting on one device deletes everywhere; a message you hide on your iPhone can still be read on that Mac.
Also check Settings > Apps > Messages > Text Message Forwarding (older iOS: Settings > Messages) for devices that receive your SMS. Remove any you do not use.
7. Silence one person
Open the contact in Messages, tap their name at the top and turn on Hide Alerts. For calls and texts from someone you never want to hear from, Block Contact on the same screen is the stronger tool.
Hidden messages in other apps
Many messengers have their own privacy features, such as locked chats, archived chats or messages that disappear after a set time. These live inside each app and are described in that app's help pages. They have the same limit as Messages: the other person keeps their copy, and screenshots can be taken.

Keeping screenshots and text you want to save
Sometimes the goal is not to hide a conversation but to keep part of it privately: a screenshot of an agreement, an address, a code, a conversation you may need later. A screenshot lands in your Photos library, in Recents and in Screenshots, and with iCloud Photos on it syncs to every device on your Apple Account.
Stash: Calculator Photo Vault does not hide messages, and it cannot read your Messages app. What it does is keep screenshots, photos, videos, PDFs and documents in its own encrypted storage, behind a PIN that is separate from your iPhone passcode, and it has secure notes for text you copy in. It opens as a working calculator; your PIN followed by = opens the vault.
Importing copies the screenshot into the vault, so delete the original from Photos and then from Recently Deleted in Photos. Files are encrypted on the device with AES-256, and there is no Stash server, so the developer cannot see or recover them. Stash on the App Store. FAQ
Can you hide text messages on iPhone without deleting them?
Partly. Turn off previews, hide alerts for the conversation, use a Focus filter and lock Messages with Face ID. The conversation still exists in the app and on any device with Messages in iCloud.
Is there a hidden messages folder on iPhone?
No. Messages has filters for known and unknown senders and a Recently Deleted list, but no hidden folder like the Hidden album in Photos.
Can I hide the Messages app in iOS 18?
You can lock it with Face ID, Touch ID or the passcode, but not hide it. Apple only allows hiding for apps downloaded from the App Store.
Do deleted messages come back?
They stay in Recently Deleted for about 30 days and can be recovered from there. After that, or after you delete them in Recently Deleted, they are gone from your devices, but not from the other person's phone.
Can a vault app hide my iMessages?
No app can move or hide conversations inside Apple's Messages. A vault app can keep screenshots and copied text private.
