To hide photos of a secret lover on an iPhone, you first have to find every copy of each photo, because one picture usually exists in several places at once: the Photos library, iCloud Photos on your other devices, Recently Deleted, a chat thread, possibly a Shared Library, and the phone of the person who took or sent it. Hiding or moving only the copy you can see leaves the others in place. For the copies you keep, the best app is Stash: Calculator Photo Vault, which stores them encrypted on the device, outside Photos and iCloud Photos, behind a working calculator.

The practical order is: find the copies, put one copy somewhere locked (the Hidden album or a vault app with its own PIN), check that the protected copy opens and plays, then decide which originals to remove. This page walks through that order. It also shows a partner who wonders about a phone what the iPhone does and does not reveal, so it is useful from both sides.

Where copies of one photo end up

Place How the copy gets there Visible to whom
Photos Library Taken with the Camera or saved from a chat Anyone holding the unlocked phone
iCloud Photos Sync this iPhone is on Every iPad and Mac on the same Apple Account, and iCloud.com
Recently Deleted You deleted the photo Kept about 30 days; opens with Face ID, Touch ID or passcode
Memories, Featured Photos, widgets Photos picks images automatically Anyone looking at the Home Screen or the For You view
iCloud Shared Photo Library The Camera can add photos to it automatically Up to six people who share the library
Chat thread or app gallery Received or sent in a messaging app Anyone who opens the conversation
Sender's or recipient's phone They kept it Out of your control

Two of these surprise people most. First, Memories and Featured Photos: Photos selects pictures on its own and may show them in a widget on the Home Screen. Hidden photos are excluded from Memories, Featured Photos and widgets, but photos still in the Library are not. Second, the Shared Library: if it is set up with a partner and the Camera shares automatically, a new photo can land in the shared library the moment it is taken.

Option 1: the Hidden album

Touch and hold a photo, or tap More (…), and choose Hide. The photo leaves the Library, albums, widgets, Memories and Featured Photos and moves to Collections > Utilities > Hidden (iOS 18). Since iOS 16 the Hidden album is locked with Face ID, Touch ID or the passcode, controlled by Settings > Apps > Photos > Use Face ID (older: Settings > Photos).

Limits: there is no separate password, so anyone who knows the iPhone passcode, or whose face is set up as an Alternate Appearance in Settings > Face ID & Passcode, can open it. With iCloud Photos on, the photo is hidden, not removed, on every device on the same Apple Account.

Option 2: a vault app with its own PIN

A vault app stores copies outside the Photos library behind a PIN that is separate from the iPhone passcode. iCloud Photos does not upload files inside a vault. The trade-off is that the app itself is visible: it appears in App Library, Search, Settings > General > iPhone Storage and the App Store purchase history.

The import-and-verify workflow

  1. Collect the copies. Check the Library, the Hidden album, Recently Deleted, Files and the chat threads where the photos came from.
  2. Import into the vault. Import copies the photos; nothing is removed yet.
  3. Verify. Open every photo inside the vault and play each video to the end. Keep the original of any file that does not open in the vault.
  4. Remove the originals you no longer want. Delete them in Photos, then empty them from Recently Deleted, or they stay there for about 30 days.
  5. Check other devices. With iCloud Photos on, deletion syncs; without it, an iPad or Mac may still hold its own copy.
  6. Check settings. Review the Shared Library's camera sharing and Settings > Notifications > Show Previews.

What a partner can see, and what they cannot

With the passcode, a partner can see the Library, Hidden, Recently Deleted, Memories, chat galleries and any installed vault app with its size. Through a shared Apple Account, Shared Library, iPad or Mac, they can see synced photos without the phone. Without the vault PIN, they cannot open an encrypted vault's contents. Nobody can recall a photo from the other person's phone.

If you suspect a partner

A hidden photo or a vault app shows that something is private, not what it is. Going through another adult's phone without permission, or installing monitoring software on it, can be illegal in many countries and is not recommended here. Talking directly, or with a couples counselor, is the better path. If you feel unsafe, use Safety Check in Settings > Privacy & Security on your own iPhone and contact local support services.

How Stash fits

Stash: Calculator Photo Vault is a vault app for step 2 of the workflow. It opens as a working calculator; your PIN and = open the vault. Photos and videos are encrypted on the device with AES-256, the key stays in the iOS Keychain, and there is no Stash server, so the developer cannot see or recover them. You can sort photos into albums and unlock with Face ID or Touch ID.

Import copies; the original stays in Photos until you delete it. A guest PIN opens a separate guest vault, and an optional encrypted backup to your own iCloud Drive or Google Drive runs only when you start it.

Stash cannot reach copies in chats, on synced devices or on another person's phone, and it is visible as an installed app.

FAQ

Do hidden photos show up in Memories?

No. Hidden photos are excluded from Memories, Featured Photos and widgets. Photos still in the Library can appear there.

If I import a photo into a vault, is it gone from Photos?

No. Import makes a copy. Delete the original yourself, then remove it from Recently Deleted.

Can my partner see photos on our shared iPad?

If the iPad uses the same Apple Account with iCloud Photos on, yes: the Library and the Hidden album sync to it.

What if the other person kept the photo?

Then a copy exists outside your control. No app on your phone can change that.
